FYI – related to now allowing use of the park for car shows with the Association agreeing to pay extra for ensuring that the turf would be reinforced and topped off after every car show. This could be a precedent for every park depending on its use. Thanks to staff for their research and for holding firm on what was needed to be done and to SACA for agreeing.

Subject: FW: turf reinforcement in St. Armands Circle Park

Greetings All,

I need to bring City Executives and Management up to speed on where we (Parks & Rec/SACA) with respect to the inquiry made by St. Armand’s Circle Association to continue to have car shows, our deep dive into how that could be done, and finally, their (SACA) acceptance of our proposal to remedy future decline. I’m pleased to say everyone is in agreement and we are ready to launch this project once the last event (May 25th weekend) has come and gone. Please see Rachel Burn’s email below.

Additionally, our contracted turf expert recommended a remedial top-dressing of the grassed area after each car show. The Board has voted to pay that additional fee too. @James Wormley – I’ll call you to discuss the mechanics of how this might get added to the fee schedule.

Best regards,

Good afternoon Candie,

On Tuesday, May 7, 2024, the St. Armands Circle Association Board of Directors met for their May meeting.  They discussed the City of Sarasota Parks and Recreation Department proposal to add reinforcement to the turf of the Circle Park, so that our Association could continue hosting car shows in the future.  I want to thank you and your team for the time that went into uncovering a cost-effective solution.  Although car shows and other events are an important part of the tourism and destination marketing strategy of St. Armands Circle, without keeping costs low, our Association could not have afforded to move forward in this endeavor.

Although one board member was absent, the remainder unanimously voted to pay $4,421.24 to reinforce the turf along the "entrance" of the park, along with a recurring cost of $308 for every car show that takes place within the park.

This past weekend, The St. Armands Circle Association and Howard Alan Events were happy to host our 22nd Annual Art & Craft Festival.  I appreciate you letting me know that the Circle Park was left in good condition.  Although we made modifications to how we use host art & craft festivals, it seems to be working out well for the artists, the vendor, and for protecting the City park.

On the weekend of May 25 & 26, the Paragon Art Festival, hosted by DSEA, will be in the Circle Park.  And the St. Armands Circle Association is anticipating hosting Exotic Cars on the Circle on September 7.  Meaning that there are no scheduled events in June, July, or August.

Once you have a timeline of repairs, if you could please share with me, so I can keep my members informed.  Thank you for your continued partnership, I look forward to hearing from you soon.
